Ohio Senate Votes to Require Audit Trail
Thursday, April 29, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The majority of the Ohio Senate voted yesterday for a bill that will allow voters to receive a paper audit trail for their votes by 2006. The bill will also permit 31 counties to replace punch-card ballots this year with electronic voting machines. "Today is a victory for Ohio voters," said Sen. Teresa Fedor, D-Toledo, in a release she issued jointly with Sen. Tom Roberts, D-Dayton.
Circuit Court Picks New Bankruptcy Judge for Youngstown
Thursday, April 29, 2004By Dan O'BrienYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- An attorney for LTV Steel Corp. has been named the new bankruptcy judge for the Youngstown court in the Northern District of Ohio.The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has named Kay Woods, 52, to succeed William T. Bodoh, who retired in January, attorney Richard P. McLaughlin said. McLaughlin was the only local member on the six-member merit selection panel who recommended Woods.
Book Buying Remains Consistent
Thursday, April 29, 2004NEW YORK -- Consumers bought about as many books in 2003 as in 2002, but didn't spend as much on them, buying used books and discounted titles increasingly.Consumer demand for general trade books held steady during 2003 compared to 2002, however spending on a per-book basis slipped, resulting in lower 2003 consumer expenditures, according to recent findings from Ipsos BookTrends, an ongoing tracking service from Ipsos-Insight, the global marketing research firm and member of the Ipsos Group.

Rendell today announced the appointment of a chairman and 43 members to the newly reorganized Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board.David J. Korean-Branded Vehicles Overtake Europeans and Domestics in Quality Study

Power and Associates 2004 Initial Quality Study, released yestoday.Manufacturers of Korean-branded vehicles, strongly driven by Hyundai's performance, have aggressively cut initial quality problems by 57% in the past six years -- dropping from 272 problems per 100 vehicles in 1998 to just 117 problems per 100 vehicles in 2004.
Canfield Development Gets Boost from State
Thursday, April 29, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mahoning County will receive a $470,000 grant for infrastructure improvements in Canfield Township to support development on 32 acres of land. State Development Director Bruce Johnson today announced the grant, which will be awarded through the Ohio Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Economic Development Program administered by the Ohio Department of Development.The state grant will be used to assist with the installation of more than 2,700 linear feet of water and sewer lines and 2,200 linear feet of flood and drainage improvements.
Essay Contest for Federal Building Time Capsule Draws 315 Entries
Thursday, April 29, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- An essay contest asking public school students to describe their visions and hopes for the future has drawn 315 entries from students in Youngstown City Schools, according to the U.S. General Services Administration.Six winners of the contest -- selected after two rounds of judging -- will be honored at a ceremony May 5 at the Nathaniel R. Jones Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 10 E. Commerce St. Their essays will be placed in a time capsule to be sealed in the cornerstone of the federal building.
