Circuit Court Picks New Bankruptcy Judge for Youngstown
By Dan O'BrienYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- An attorney for LTV Steel Corp. has been named the new bankruptcy judge for the Youngstown court in the Northern District of Ohio. The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has named Kay Woods, 52, to succeed William T. Bodoh, who retired in January, attorney Richard P. McLaughlin said. McLaughlin was the only local member on the six-member merit selection panel who recommended Woods. The panel submitted its recommendation in December and the judges on the 6th Circuit chose Woods March 12.The appointment will become official in the next two months or so, McLaughlin said. Woods, of Solon, is undergoing the standard background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service. Eleven candidates interviewed for the post and the panel submitted five finalists late last year, McLaughlin said. Of the five, two local attorneys tied for second place -- David Detec, with Manchester, Powers, Bennett & Ullman Co. LPA, and Timothy Reardon, with Nadler, Nadler & Burdman Co. LPA. Both firms have their offices here.McLaughlin said he had hoped the panel would recommend a local attorney, but noted all the applicants were qualified for the position. The panel included four members from Cleveland area law firms.Woods, of Solon, is an associate general counsel for LTV Steel, McLaughlin said. As a lawyer for LTV, she was a member of the team who helped engineer the sale of that company to International Steel Group through bankruptcy court in Youngstown. Bodoh presided over LTV's bankruptcy and sale. "She has significant qualifications," McLaughlin said, noting attorneys who serve large corporations often gain experience in complex areas such as employee and tax law. Before LTV, Woods worked at the Cleveland law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, McLaughlin added. She earned her undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University and graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University Law School.McLaughlin said he expects Woods to begin work by August. The position pays $142,324 a year. Although not a prerequisite for the position, Woods expressed a willingness to relocate to the Mahoning Valley should she be chosen, McLaughlin added.Contact Dan O'Brien at [email protected]"
