Father's Day Spending Dips
Wednesday, June 16, 2004WASHINGTON -- Though slightly more consumers will be celebrating Father's Day this year, they will be spending less on the holiday. The NRF 2004 Father's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation, found that 72.1% of Americans plan to celebrate Father's Day. Those who will celebrate plan to spend an average of $86.19, down from a high of $99.65 last year. Father's Day spending this year is expected to reach $8.04 billion.

Basketball League Plans Local Team
Wednesday, June 16, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The game of professional basketball is returning to Youngstown -- with players who will run full-speed the entire game and concentrate on frequent and accurate shots, officials of the new team's league announced today in a news release.Mikal Duilio, International Basketball League commissioner, will be visiting Youngstown on June 18 to officially announce the formation of the team and to meet with community leaders, businesses and the media. The league will operate the team until an owner or ownership group decides to purchase it.
Taft Signs Pension Reform Legislation
Wednesday, June 16, 2004COLUMBUS -- Gov. Bob Taft today signed into law Senate Bill 133, comprehensive pension system reform legislation. Taft called for the legislation late last year, amid news reports of gross abuses of the public and pensioners' trust at two of the five pension boards."I commend the Legislature for heeding my call to strengthen the accountability, oversight, and ethics requirements of our public pension systems," Taft said in a news release.
Watchdog Group Releases Congressional Ratings
Wednesday, June 16, 2004WASHINGTON -- A government watchdog group today gave Congress a failing grade for protecting tax dollars. The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, in its 2003 Congressional Ratings, reported that the first time since 1994, there were no "Taxpayer Superheroes" (with scores of 100 percent) in the entire Congress. The House had only 68 "Taxpayer Heroes" with scores of 80 percent or above and the Senate had only 11, compared to 80 and 24 from last year.
