Tax Foundation Ranks Taxes on Alcohol by State
WASHINGTON -- Ohio ranks 33rd among the states in the excise taxes it imposes on beer, 11th in taxes on distilled spirits and 38th in taxes on wine, the Tax Institute reports. It bases those rankings on information supplied by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.
The Tax Foundation is a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., that monitors taxes and rates of taxation at the national, state and municipal levels.
Ohio imposes a tax of 18 cents per gallon of beer, $9.84 per gallon of hard liquor and 32 cents per gallon of wine sold in the state.
Pennsylvania ranks fourth-lowest in excise taxes on beer, but 15th highest on distilled spirits. Regarding taxes on wine, the Tax Foundation did not provide a figure, noting only that the Keystone State is a control state, which means alcohol is subject to ad valorem markups and excise taxes.
Pennsylvania taxes beer at eight cents per gallon and hard liquor at $7.22 per gallon.
The state with the highest tax on beer is Tennessee, which imposes $1.17 per gallon, with Alaska second at $1.07 and Alabama third at $1.05.
The state with the lowest rate is Wyoming at two cents per gallon. Second-lowest is Missouri at six cents and third-lowest is Wisconsin at six cents.
The federal government imposes an excise tax of $18 per barrel, which, based on 42 gallons to a barrel, translates to just under 43 cents per gallon.
The state with the highest excise tax on distilled spirits, $35.22, is Washington, followed by its neighbor to the south, Oregon, at $22.73. Third is Virginia at $20.56.
Neither Vermont nor New Hampshire imposes a tax on distilled spirits sold within their borders and Wyoming, third-lowest, taxes a gallon of liquor at 49 cents.
The federal excise tax on distilled spirits is $13.50 per gallon, the Tax Foundation says.
Of the 45 states ranked for taxes on wine, Alaska imposes the highest at $2.50 per gallon with Florida second at $2.25 and Iowa third at $1.75.
Lowest is Louisiana at 11 cents per gallon, followed by California at 20 cents and Texas, also at 20 cents.
The federal tax on wine is $1.07 per gallon.
