Insurance Program Saves Ohioans $5M, Lt. Gov. Says
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Senior Health Insurance Program of the state Department of Insurance has helped Ohioans with Medicare save more than $5 million so far this year, says Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor who also is director of the department.
The program also has helped 100,000 consumers over the last year, making Ohio one of only six states to reach that milestone, she said.
“Ohioans were able to realize savings by working with OSHIIP to identify the coverage most suitable for their needs,” Taylor said in a prepared statement. “This illustrates how important it is for consumers to take advantage of the free information and counseling provided by OSHIIP.”
The comprehensive approach to consumer education and customer service of the program is modeled on programs offered by other states, she noted, adding that OSHIIP educates Ohioans through hotline experts, trained volunteers, a speakers bureau, a website, and an array of publications. Among the topics addressed are Medicare, Medicare Part D drug coverage, Medicare Advantage, Medicare supplement insurance and financial assistance programs.
In addition, the senior health insurance prgram has a statewide outreach presence that includes Medicare Check-up Days during open enrollment period each fall – when the program saved consumers a record $5.5 million, and Welcome to Medicare events, Taylor says. The Welcome to Medicare events are under way and run through May. They help new and soon-to-be beneficiaries understand the basics of Medicare.
