Bipartisan Praise for US Steel's Lorain Announcement
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman issued a joint news release Thursday that applauded -- and took partial credit for -- U.S. Steel’s announcement that it is considering an expansion of its operations in Lorain (READ STORY).
In December, the two senators led a group of their colleagues in urging the Commerce Department to maintain antidumping duties and countervailing duties on Chinese steel pipe imports, they noted. Oil country tubular goods (OCTG) are used for domestic oil exploration, particularly in the shale industry, and are produced in Ohio by U.S. Steel in Lorain as well as V&M Star Youngstown, Wheatland Tube in Warren and JMC Steel in Brookfield.
U.S. Steel's announcement is "great news for Lorain, northeast Ohio, and a testament to the strength of Ohio’s manufacturing base,” said Brown, D-Ohio. “I will continue to fight illegal Chinese steel pipe imports so companies like U.S. Steel can stay and grow in Ohio. Our state is adding manufacturing jobs for the first time since the 1990s and our hard working men and women are a major reason why. I look forward to U.S. Steel continuing that progress.”
“Ohio’s hard-working manufacturers are second to none, and U.S. Steel’s interest in adding jobs in northeast Ohio is welcome news for Lorain,” added Portman, R-Ohio. “I have stood up for the steel industry and fought to ensure that American manufactured goods are on a level playing field with their global competitors, and I will continue to support these workers in Northeast Ohio and across the country.”
Joining Portman and Brown in applauding U.S. Steel’s announcement was Lorain Mayor Chase Ritenauer.
“U.S. Steel’s expansion announcement speaks volumes about continued growth in the manufacturing sector in Lorain, Ohio,” he said. “With a proud, storied history as a steel city, our workforce and end product are second to none. The city looks forward to a continued positive relationship with U.S. Steel along with continued growth opportunities as a result of the bipartisan efforts of our U.S. senators.”
