YSU to Award TV Star Ed O'Neill an Honorary Degree
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown native and television star Ed O’Neill, in the hit show “Modern Family,” will receive an honorary Doctor of Arts degree May 18 during the undergraduate spring commencement of Youngstown State University.
YSU President Cynthia E. Anderson, who retires June 30, will speak at the graduate commencement at 2:30 that afternoon. Some 200 masters’ degrees and doctorates will be conferred.
O’Neill graduated from Ursuline High School and attended YSU and Ohio University. While at YSU, he earned accolades for his performances in productions of the YSU theater department and community theater. He played linebacker for the YSU Penguins under the university’s first head football coach, Dike Beede.
In 1996, O’Neill was recognized as the YSU Penguin of the Year. Signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was cut in training camp and worked as a social studies teacher at Hayes Middle School in Youngstown before becoming an actor. He is best known for his role as Al Bundy on the sitcom “Married … with Children.”
About 1,000 undergraduate students will receive diplomas at the 10 a.m. May 18 ceremony. To ensure adequate seating and to best accommodate the increasing number of those wishing to attend commencement exercises, tickets will be required.
Tickets are not required for the graduate commencement.
