Tressel Returns to YSU for Trustees Meeting, Reception
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – YSU president-designate Jim Tressel and his wife Ellen will attend tonight’s meeting of the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Hall, where every seat is likely to be filled for the triumphant return of YSU’s former football coach.
The board is expected to go into closed executive session “for no more than 30 minutes … to further consider the terms of the president's new contract,” states a media advisory from YSU, after which Tressel and his wife, Ellen, will to join the open meeting. “It is possible that Mr. Tressel and Board Chair Sudershan K. Garg will then sign the general terms of Mr. Tressel's contract. Mr. Tressel is expected to make remarks at the meeting.”
When the trustees adjourn, Tressel will hold a press conference in the Ohio Room on the second floor of Kilcawley Center. He will then return to the Chestnut Room for a public reception, YSU says.
Trustees voted unanimously Friday to appoint Tressel YSU’s ninth president (READ STORY). He replaces Randy J. Dunn who resigned in March to become president of Southern Illinois University. It's speculated (READ STORY) that Tressel was actually offered the job on Thursday and withdrew his candidacy to become the president of the University of Akron, which announced its selection late Thursday afternoon of Scott Scarborough provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Toledo. YSU Board Chairman Sudershan Garg said Friday that Tressel was notified of his selection Friday morning.
News of the appointment of Tressel, also the former head coach at Ohio State University, was carried nationwide and sports columnists offered favorable and unfavorable comments about his selection.
