Tressel: Ignite Population as 'Difference-Makers'
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Jim Tressel, one of three finalists to become the next president of Youngstown State University (READ STORY), writes in his cover-letter for the position, "It is so apparent that the entire Mahoning Valley is poised to collaborate to launch a magical era in the region and beyond."
Tressel says he has "heard from faculty, staff, students, business leaders, elected officials, media professionals, alumni, area educators and countless citizens of "The Valley"... all with the same message -- 'Come back and join us as we do extraordinary things today."
Tressel's letter and resume are posted at YSU's website (CLICK HERE) along with the cover letters and resumes of the two other finalists for the position, Mary Cullinan, president and professor of English at Southern Oregon University, and Gary L. Miller, chancellor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Recounting his family's connections to the Mahoning Valley, and its "special place in our hearts," Tressel says, "The alumni and Valley residents, whether they reside in the area or elsewhere, have unparalleled pride in their school and region. This population can be ignited to be difference-makers for the bright future that lies ahead."
Tressel is also one of three finalists to become the next president of the University of Akron, where he is executive vice president for student success. In his letter applying for that job, Tressel set forth a two-phase transition plan to stabilize the school's fiscal health and re-align "operations and faculty-student experiences" to increase graduation and retention rates (READ STORY).
The schools appear to be on parallel tracks in their decision-making timetables.
"While admittedly this is a very busy time in my professional life," Tressel's letter to YSU's Board of Trustees concludes, "it seems only right to see if the time and fit is right for the Tressels at Youngstown State."
