Tressel Among 3 Finalists Named for YSU Presidency
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Former Youngstown State University Penguins and Ohio State Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel is among three finalists for YSU's presidency, the university announced this afternoon.
Tressel is also a finalist for the presidency of the University of Akron, where he now serves as vice president of student success.
Also on the short list of candidates are Mary Cullinan, president and professor of English at Southern Oregon University, and Gary L. Miller, chancellor at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, the university said.
"We believe we have a highly qualified group of final candidates, and we look forward to them traveling to Youngstown, visiting our campus and meeting the people of the university and the community," said Sudershan K. Garg, chair of the YSU Board of Trustees.
In all, 37 individuals applied for the position. The search committee, composed of nine members of the YSU Board of Trustees and two student members, interviewed six candidates Friday and Saturday via video-conferencing.
Tressel's candidacy is being touted by a group of business, community and political leaders in the Mahoning Valley, including U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13. As a head coach, Tressel won four NCAA Division I-AA championships at YSU and one NCAA Division I title with the Buckeyes.
The three finalists will visit campus of May 5 for interviews and open forums, the university said.
