Siemens to Make $440M In-Kind Grant to YSU
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Officials with Siemens Corp. will be at Youngstown State University tomorrow to formally announce a $440 million in-kind grant to prepare its students for advanced manufacturing and engineering jobs through a collaboration with the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.
Siemens Corp. is the U.S. Subsidiary of Siemens AG, a global corporation dealing in electronics and electrical engineering, operating in the industry, energy, health-care, and infrastructure and cities sectors, according to its website. Among those expected to be on hand for Thursday's official announcement are Eric Spiegel, president and CEO of Siemens Corp.; Helmuth Ludwig, CEO of Siemens Industry Sector in North America; U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio; U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-6 Ohio; Cynthia Anderson, president of YSU; and Tom Humphries, president and CEO of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.
The grant will specifically go to YSU's College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and will provide students with state-of-the-art product lifecycle management software and training. The software will be used to prepare them for careers in additive manufacturing, computer-aided engineering, and robotics design for the automotive, defense, energy, high-tech electronics, machinery and aerospace industries, according to news release from the office of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.
“Northeast Ohio’s TechBelt is a shining example of American ingenuity and a testament to Ohio’s ability to make things,” Brown said in a prepared statement. “Siemens’ grant to YSU educates Mahoning Valley’s young people so they can help the United States out innovate the rest of the world with NAMII leading the way.”
In distributing the news release, Brown's office scheduled it for publication tomorrow. Two local news organizations broke the embargo and others, including The Business Journal, followed suit.
As of this posting, Youngstown State University has not released details of the in-kind grant.
