Randy Dunn Signs Contract to Be 8th YSU President
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Randy J. Dunn, president of Murray State University since 2006, was formally introduced as the eighth president of Youngstown State University Wednesday. He assumes his new duties July 15.
Sundershan Garg, chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees, presented Dunn and his wife, Ronda, toward the end of the trustees’ meeting Wednesday after announcing that he had signed a three-year contract with Dunn earlier yesterday. Garg introduced him as “YSU’s newest penguin.”
Attorney Joe Houser negotiated Dunn’s contract for the university with the incoming president’s lawyer, Garg related.
Dunn’s annual base compensation is $375,000 and he will be the first chief executive of YSU to live in the president’s house, the former Pollock House on Wick Avenue. He will also have an allowance for a vehicle, have YSU pay his professional dues, entertainment expenses related to his office and have YSU pay his relocation expenses from western Kentucky.
Because Dunn assumes his office July 15 and President Cynthia E. Anderson retires June 30, the trustees named the provost and vice president for academic affairs, Ikram Khawaja, interim president the first 14 days of July. Dunn said he expects to be on campus before the 15th. Long-scheduled family commitments prevent him from assuming office July 1.
Khawaja will receive no extra compensation for his two weeks as interim president.
In brief remarks, Dunn thanked the board for the “vote of confidence in me and my wife” called himself and the leadership of the university “stewards with a weighty responsibility,” and stated that he and his wife “are excited to accept this role. We’re excited to be Penguins” and promised “exciting times ahead.”
Meeting with reporters afterward, Dunn continued to paint broad brushstrokes about how he will lead as president. “I don’t want to sound cocky,” he said, “but I intend to hit the ground running” and promised to “make the transition as seamless as possible.”
He has spoken with Anderson on the phone and enjoyed “two in-person conversations with her” that he described as “in depth.” He praised Anderson’s cooperation and her service to the university.
He also lauded the “very comprehensive, massive, long-range plans” the trustees and senior leadership of the university have compiled. “They were very well done,” Dunn remarked.
In her last meeting as president, Anderson couldn’t help but choke up s bit as she praised the support of her staff and the trustees during her tenure before offering a litany of what has taken place during her three years.
Trustees named the Student Government Center in Kilcawley Center, the student union, in her honor.
Anderson and her husband will move to Nevada, she related, near Lake Mead.
Trustees re-elected Garg chairman, John Jakubec vice chairman, and Franklin Bennett secretary. Both Garg and Jakubec are medical doctors; Bennett is an attorney.
