Mahoning Career Center Gets Vertical Milling Center
CANFIELD, Ohio -- Students in the manufacturing technology/precision machining program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have received a new Haas Toolroom Vertical Milling Center. The equipment will help them better prepare for the job market.
The equipment will allow students to learn how to operate a full-automated three-axis milling machine, said their instructor, Mike Lutz. The machine also will teach students the basics of writing in G-code and M-code, and tool offsetting and will be incorporated into junior- and senior-year coursework in the program.
The equipment mirrors the type of equipment and programs the students will find themselves working on after graduation. “Any manufacturer would have this on their job," Lutz noted. "By gaining the knowledge in here, our students will have a leg up when they graduate.”
The school also purchased four simulators that will allow the students to practice the coding and programming necessary to make it function without working on the full machine, said John Zehentbauer, center director.
