Canfield Schools to Hold 3-D Printing Demo, Open House
CANFIELD, Ohio – The Canfield Local School District will hold a 3-D printing and additive manufacturing demonstration and open house Thursday at C.H. Campbell Elementary School, 300 Moreland Drive. The event, which runs 6-8 p.m., is open to anyone interested in learning about the STEM disciplines – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
During the event, the Canfield High School FIRST Robotics Team will also be demonstrating their competition robots.
Now offered at Canfield High School, InventorCloud, will be expanded to Canfield Middle School next school year and STEM experiences will be offered in the district’s elementary buildings, said Alex Geordan, superintendent. “We are also excited to be partnering with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center to bring a STEM school to the valley for ninth and 10th grade students,” he added.
AST2 also developed the Invent3D printer, which is designed to allow teams of students to assemble, use the printer to build their own prototypes, and then dissemble the printer for use by the next team of students.
Developed by Applied Systems & Technology Transfer LLC, Youngstown, and offered in several Mahoning Valley school districts, InventorCloud offers a series of courses for students in elementary, middle and high school that brings together design thinking with the opportunity use 3-D printers. Students study the STEM disciplines, learn how to work in teams, problem solve and use solid modeling software programs. Working in teams, they are given challenges such as redesigning a common household product or designing a futuristic car in which they have to create their own prototypes.
InventorCloud is licensed by Advanced Methods in Innovation, a Youngtown-based non-profit committed to empowering students and educators with innovative curriculum and use of technology.
“Numerous studies show that US students lag the world in educational achievement, particularly in the STEM fields and employers cite that today’s graduates lack life skills such as critical thinking and collaboration,” said Julie Michael Smith, executive director, AMI. “InventorCloud seeks to inculcate a passion for learning and spark creativity in students that improves their educational outcomes and prepares them for success beyond the classroom.”
