Camaro SS to be Raffled at Strimbu Memorial BBQ
BROOKFIELD, Ohio -- The 25th Annual Strimbu BBQ will take place May 7 at the Yankee Lake Ballroom to raise funds for the Strimbu Memorial Fund. To mark the occasion, organizers will hold a raffle for a 2014 Camaro SS.
This iconic muscle car, painted in “Red Hot,” comes with a sunroof, black leather SS interior, a 6.2-liter V8 engine and 20-inch aluminum wheels, among other features. This Camaro has a sticker price of almost $43,000. Or, the winner can take $25,000 in cash instead.
Money raised through the raffle, sponsored by Flynn’s Tire & Auto Service, will be used to further the philanthropic work of the late Tom and Nick Strimbu Jr. Also this year, because it’s the 25th anniversary, the number and amount of the college scholarships have been increased to 12 awards of $2,500 to local high school students plus one $25,000 scholarship to the overall winner. As measured by dollars, this is the most any local organization awards in scholarships, organizers say.
The event draws a sell-out crowd of 1,600 each year that nets more than $150,000 for the fund.
Sponsors promise an “endless” supply of food reminiscent of a full-scale Texas barbecue along with a multitude of appetizers along with beef, turkey, duck, pork, ox, fish and lamb served straight from the spit. This year’s live entertainment features country-rock star Chris Higbee. In 2000, Higbee founded a band, the Poverty Neck Hillbillies, named after a hollow on his father’s farm.
“The Strimbu Memorial Fund was created to perpetuate the work of the late Tom and Nick Strimbu Jr., who had a passion for leading individuals and economic development agencies in order to attract, assist and retain the industrial base of the valley,” says board President Paul O’Brien. “In addition, when the Strimbu Memorial Fund awards scholarships to area students, we are investing in the life of a person -- and that is worth millions.”
Since its inception in 1990, the Strimbu Memorial Fund has provided millions of dollars in donations and scholarships. The fund also supports local economic development and many charitable organizations; 99% of the proceeds go to these scholarships and grants.
Tickets are $90 and can be purchased by calling John Holliday at 724 699 8869. Tickets for the car raffle are $20 each, three for $50 or eight for $100 and can be obtained by calling 330 448 4046, ext. 134. The winning ticket will be drawn May 7.
