Boyd Scholarship Aids Minority Students in Health Careers
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Joan J. and Willard L. Boyd have established a scholarship at Youngstown State University designed to help qualified minority students who want to pursue a degree in health or medically related careers in clinical laboratory science.
Applicants must be minority students majoring in either the two- or four-year clinical laboratory program at YSU, be enrolled full-time and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, be a resident of northeastern Ohio or western Pennsylvania, and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (Fafsa).
First preference will be given to graduates of the Youngstown Early College High School program. Selection will be made by a scholarship committee of the clinical laboratory department in conjunction with the YSU Foundation and the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
Joan Boyd, a full professor at YSU, was granted emerita status this year. She began her tenure in the department of allied health (now health professions) in 1977 after completing seven years as a clinical laboratory scientist at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. She was instrumental in developing and designing the program curricula, coordinating the MLT/MLS programs at YSU and was director of both programs until 1991. She earned her doctorate from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati in 1993, a master’s degree in health care from Central Michigan University in 1980 afrer receiving her baccalaureate in medical technology in 1975 at YSU. This followed a 12-month internship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in 1960.
Willard L. Boyd earned a baccalaureate in 1976 at YSU where he completed graduate work in education and management in 1980. He was postmaster in the Youngstown Postal Service 14 years after serving in several managerial positions. Boyd is actively involved in the community and serves on several boards.
