Tourists Bring $480M Boost to Trumbull County
Monday, November 24, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- Visitors spent nearly $317 million in Trumbull County during 2013, resulting in $480 million in total direct, indirect and induced sales for area businesses, according to a study sponsored by the Ohio Department of Development's Tourism Division.
The study, conducted by Longwoods International and Tourism Economics, based in Wayne, Pa., sampled 200,000 consumers and provided information regarding economic impact, visitor profiles, image, advertising awareness and effectiveness, and return on investment.
TechBelt Initiative Sets Sights on 2015 Goals

Some 30 members of the group – a collaborative effort involving economic development, academic and government representatives from northeastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia – participated in a morning-long summit Nov. 21 in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University.
JobsOhio Officials Report Private Agency Works
Monday, November 24, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- JobsOhio, the public-private agency created three years ago to promote economic development within the state, has seen “great strides” but has yet to show its full impact, its executive director allows.
John Minor, who took over as executive director about two years ago; Jim Boland, chairman of the Jobs-Ohio Board of Directors; Don Grubbs, general counsel; and Matt Englehart, spokesman; recently met with The Business Journal’s editorial board. During the meeting, which lasted about 90 minutes, they addressed how the agency operates and criticisms leveled at it.
Small Businesses Expect Strong Holiday Sales
Monday, November 24, 2014NEW YORK -- Nearly half, 47%, of retailers expect holiday sales to be stronger this year than last, reports the American Express OPEN Small Business Holiday Monitor. And 36% of small-business owners overall anticipate the same level.
Far more small-business owners, 42%, will give their staff end-of-year bonuses than a year ago, 27%.
Small Towns Draw Tourists to Lawrence County
Friday, November 21, 2014NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- As you drive down the hill to the borough of Volant, Pa., you see one building stand out: Volant Mills. You can’t miss it. It sits at a bend in the road, a three-story white building with a blue sign proclaiming its name. It has been the center of commercial activity in Volant since it was built in the early 1800s.
Today the building, which is mostly a gift store, is one of the town’s top tourist attractions.
