YSU Steel Bridge Team Places High in National Contest
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- After winning the regional contest, a team of 12 students from Youngstown State University's Rayen College of Engineering and Technology placed 11th in the National Student Steel Bridge competition in Colorado. Forty-four teams from universities nationwide competed at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. Among the teams YSU beat were Ohio State, Columbia University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Northeastern University and University of Wisconsin-Madison."We're very proud of our students," said Cynthia Hirtzel, dean of the college. "I'd put them up against any school in the nation. We have amazing, incredible students in this college."The team placed first at the regional competition at the University of Pittsburgh in April. This is only the second year that YSU has been invited to compete nationally. Last year, the team finished 36th. "After a semester of working hard and solving design problems, it's rewarding to do well on the national level," said Lance Kraynak of West Middlesex, Pa., who was co-captain of the team along with Robert Curran of New Bethlehem, Pa. The team's 145-pound, 25-foot-long and 4-foot-high steel suspension bridge was judged on deflection, construction speed, weight, efficiency, economy and aesthetics.Scott C. Martin, chair and professor of civil engineering, was the team's advisor."
