YSU Recreation Center Construction Is On Schedule
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Construction of the $12.1 million Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center at Youngstown State University is on schedule, within budget and about one-third complete, according to Dennis Clouse, director of planning and construction. As of the first of November, 550 tons (1.12 million pounds) of structural steel, 75 tons (150,000 pounds) of re-bar steel, 101,250 cubic feet of concrete, 1.4 million units of face brick, 100,000 units of concrete block and 1,000 cubic feet of cast stone have been used in the construction, he said. The building perimeter should be enclosed by the end of November, Clouse said. On average, about 50 workers are on the site each day, and that number will jump to about 100 once interior work begins early next year, Clouse said. The facility, which will feature a fitness center, climbing wall, racquetball courts and a jogging track, will be the first recreation center at a public university in Ohio built entirely with private funds. The steel for the 55-foot climbing wall is in place. The wall, which will include eight climbing positions, will be the highest climbing wall in all of Ohio, Clouse said.Construction also has begun on the $1.6 million expansion and enhancement of the YSU bookstore adjacent to the new rec center. Both the center and bookstore projects are expected to be finished by the start of fall classes in August 2005, Clouse said.Visit Youngstown State University: www.ysu.edu"
