YSU Hosts 5th Business Camp for High School Students
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- For the fifth consecutive year, Youngstown State University will host Ohio Business Week, a camp for high school students that teaches them the rudiments of American capitalism.The camp, to be held on the YSU campus, runs from Sunday to Saturday, July 31. Of 130 participating students about to begin their sophomore, junior or seniors years, 42 attend schools in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The balance attend schools throughout Ohio.During the week, students learn business skills, concepts, and theories from local and regional business leaders. They compete in business-related activities and learn about how firms operate and entrepreneurship by developing a business plan, a marketing plan, and a financial plan for a start-up business.This year's sponsors comprise the Youngstown Foundation, Alltel Communications, First Place Bank Community Foundation, Canfield Rotary Club, Delphi Packard Electric Systems, First Energy Foundation, General Motors Lordstown Complex, First National Bank of Pennsylvania, Hill Barth & King LLC, Schwebel Family Foundation, Cafaro Foundation, National City Bank, Kinsman Area Rotary Club, The Herald, Farmers National Bank, Rotary Club of Austintown, Butler Wick & Co. Inc., Boardman Rotary Club, Sherman Creative Promotions and YSU's Williamson College of Business Administration.The dean of the Williamson College, Betty Jo Licata, said, "This is a valuable opportunity to showcase the facilities and opportunities at YSU. We're proud that through partnerships with Ohio Business Week and our business community, high school students from across the state will have the chance to learn about business and college life as they experiencing YSU and the Mahoning Valley."Students and their company advisers will tour local companies next Friday to learn about company production and personnel. Those to be visited are Aerolite Extrusions, Celestial Cakes, AVI Food Systems, Home Savings and Loan Co., Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Panelmatic America, Schwebel Baking Co., Shelton-Mathews Chocolates, WFMJ-TV 21 and Wendell August Forge.The student companies' exhibits will be on display in the Chestnut Room from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 31 before closing ceremonies.Two of next week's speakers are Brian Blasko, author of Cruisin' Through Life at 35 mph, and Alan P.
