YSU Gets $97,000 to Evaluate Building Restoration Needs"
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Controlling Board has approved the release of $97,000 to evaluate damage to several buildings on the campus of Youngstown State University, according to state Rep. Ken Carano, D-Austintown. DeBartolo Hall, Moser Hall, Ward Beecher Hall, and Bliss Hall, all of which were built prior to 1975, have suffered brick failures, cracks, and joint separations due to weather, age, and normal settling. In addition, Beeghly Center has experienced some interior masonry wall cracks and deterioration, Carano noted."Although all these problems certainly impact the look of the buildings, the problems clearly go beyond appearance," Carano pointed out. "Parts of these buildings have literally been crumbling, and some have even experienced water damage, making some inside areas unusable. The work can't be put off."YSU has selected the Thornton-Tomasetti Group Inc. of Chicago to study the deterioration, investigate possible solutions, identify the scope of the project, design and bid the project, and manage the restoration, Carano said. The total cost of the project is anticipated to be $1 million."
