Youngstown Convocation Center Site Powers Up
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The city's Board of Control this morning voted to approve payment for Ohio Edison to provide general electrical service to the construction site of the Youngstown Convocation Center. The city paid $57,955 for the utility to extend new service lines to the site of the $41 million project. The electrical work is already taking place along Front Street, said Jeffrey L. Chagnot, city economic development director. Earlier this week, the Board of Control approved nearly $4.8 million in contracts for structural steel and precast concrete for the construction project. this morning the board also approved spending $11,405.50 for Brownfield Restoration Group to conduct a Phase I environmental assessment of the former Aeroquip property on Albert Street. Once the assessment is made, the city will apply for money from the Clean Ohio fund for testing of the property. Testing of the property alone is expected to cost in excess of $250,000 because of the extent of the potential contaminants, Chagnot said, and demolition and cleanup on the 11-acre site could cost upwards of $2 million to $2.5 million. In addition, the board approved two Youngstown Initiative performance grants. RRI of Ohio, a rubber recycling and manufacturing startup, receive a $60,000 grant toward its total project cost of $705,000. Located on Jones Street, the company expects to create 30 jobs over a three-year period. SKA Limited received a $34,200 grant to convert the former First Federal building downtown into a wine and martini bar. The project is expected to cost $227,360."
