Youngstown C-130 Crew Flies Relief Supplies to Russia
VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Two Air Force Reserve C-130 crew deployed to the 38th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, flew medical and humanitarian supplies to Vladikavkaz, Russia Monday. The first C-130 crew to land was from the Youngstown and the second was from Colorado Springs, Colo., according to Master Sgt. Bryan Ripple, public affairs officer at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station here. The crew dropped off approximately 36,000 pounds of medical and humanitarian supplies for use by relief agencies in the treatment and support for the hundreds of victims after the recent terrorist act in Beslan, Russia, Ripple said. The Russian Government requested assistance after the United States offered support. "I spoke to the Russian interpreter and he was very thankful that we made the journey over here," said Lt. Col. Richard L. Galante, commander of the 38th Airlift Squadron..Galante is also assigned as the commander of the 773rd Airlift Squadron, one of two flying squadrons assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. He and the other members of his crew are activated and deployed to Ramstein Air Base while supporting Operation Joint Forge. The other members of the Youngstown aircrew include Capt. Phil Shirah, Capt. Caryn Warren, Master Sgt. Randy Pritschau, Master Sgt. Henry Gibson, and Master Sgt. Ken Calhoun."I could see some of the other Russian officials were really teary-eyed and really appreciated the support," Galante said, "that we brought in these medical supplies and other equipment that they need so badly.""They said it was nice that our countries were in such community with one anotherÂ…that we were living like brothers in the midst of tragedy," said Staff Sgt. Clayton E. Bronnee, a Russian linguist with the 426th Information Operations Squadron. "They said they felt very bad for us when 9-11 happened and they appreciate our help and support now this tragedy has befallen them."The humanitarian supplies included sheets, blankets, medicine, burn kits, bandages and dressings, as well as specialized medical equipment.As of Sept. 3 the 910th Airlift Wing had about 340 reservists activated, with about 110 of them deployed to locations throughout the world.Visit the Youngstown Air Reserve Station at www.afrc.af.mil"
