What's Black and White and Read All Over?
SHARON, Pa. -- The New York Times, USA Today and The Herald are available to students at Penn State University Shenango Campus free of charge, Monday through Friday, via the newspaper dispensing machines on campus, officials report. Students can access the papers using their student ID card. The Newspaper Readership Program is offered at 20 Penn State campuses offering undergraduate programs as well as Penn State's Dickinson School of Law. Last year, Penn State students read more than 1.8 million local, regional and national newspapers, securing theUniversity's position as having the largest newspaper readership program at any university in the nation. Shenango campus' newspaper dispensing machines are located in the Student Union of Sharon Hall, the corridor of Lecture Hall, and the lobby of the Forker Laboratory. The Newspaper Readership Program is based on the rationale that regular readership would enhance the learning environment of Penn State Students; would contribute to the general education goal of the university by providing a broad range of information/knowledge necessary to understand the world in which we live; and would help in the acquisition of skills important for educated citizenship. The program was introduced on a limited basis during spring semester 1997, with newspapers being delivered to each resident's room in three residence halls on the main campus at University Park. It was expanded in fall semester 1997 to include all 43 residence halls at University Park, as well as 30 residence halls at the other eight Penn State campuses that provide housing for students. In fall 2000, the program was expanded to include all students living both on- and off-campus. Using their regular student ID cards, students can access more than 100 newspaper dispensing machines at 20 Penn State campuses offering undergraduate programs. Penn State's Dickinson School of Law began offering the program to its students in fall 2001.In 2001-2002, Penn State students read more than 1.8 million local, regional and national newspapers this past year, securing the University's position as having the largest newspaper readership program at any university in the nation.Visit Penn State Shenango: www.shenango.psu.edu"
