WASHINGTON -- Warren's Riverwalk Project is getting $180,263, the balance of the $500,000 in federal funding obtained by U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, the congressman announced yesterday. "Warren's Riverwalk is a centerpiece for the redevelopment of downtown Warren," Ryan said. "In addition to being a fundamental community resource for the 17th District, the Riverwalk has the potential to be an economic engine that will play an important part in driving the a revitalization of downtown Warren."The Riverwalk consists of a pedestrian-bicycle linear park and grounds and is expected to spur economic and community development in downtown Warren, Ryan said. The project also provides access to local architectural and environmental assets through the preservation and expansion of existing structures, he added. As a community resource, the Riverwalk project seeks to coordinate historic preservation, outdoor recreation, cultural events and educational opportunities for a diverse cross section of residents and visitors and will serve as a key connector in the Great Ohio Lake-to-River Greenway Trail, the congressman said. The Riverwalk also connects existing pedestrian-bike linear parks along natural waterways and unused railroad corridors throughout the state, he said. The $500,000 was included in the fiscal year 2004 Omnibus Appropriation Act, Ryan said. The congressman said he plans to week more money. "This funding for the Riverwalk is the first step," he said. "I intend to make it a priority to bring home additional federal funding for this important project.""
