United Way Highlights Yearlong Efforts
BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Bruce R. Beeghly, president of Altronic Inc.and outgoing chairman of The Community Corp., thanked the business, labor, financial and general community for their continuous support of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way at the annual meeting May 19 at Antone's Banquet Centre here. William J. Bresnahan, president of Hynes Industries, and his team of campaign volunteers raised $3,004,700."We deeply appreciate the generosity of each and every donor, and the hard work and dedication of our volunteers who contributed to the success of our campaign," Beeghly said. "Through the various committees, including campaign, public relations, finance, planning, community investment, the Union Counselor Association, and the Community Services Committee, our volunteers give generously of their time, resources and expertise. Hundreds of volunteers from companies and organizations throughout the Valley work together to help make our community a better place." The Community Corp. is the parent of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way."The true test of effectiveness is the impact on the lives of those who need a helping hand in the Mahoning Valley," said Don Cagigas, United Way president and chief professional officer, he added. Cagigas said, "By investing in United Way, our donors can be assured that their dollars are invested where they will make the biggest impact on the most critical community needs."In recognition of the 85th anniversary of the local organization, Cagigas introduced a slide presentation highlighting the history of the United Way. "While we have seen many changes during the past 85 years, three things remain constant; our donors, our volunteers, and the people in our community who need help and depend on us," he said.Cagigas noted the following significant accomplishments of the past year:Impact Teams consisting of United Way volunteers, service professionals, system representatives and consumers have been meeting throughout the year to identify critical issues, and develop community-wide goals and strategies for each of the five Impact Areas; Nurturing our Children, Enriching the Lives of Seniors, Promoting Health and Wellness, Caring for People in Crisis, and Achieving our Potential. The final plan is expected to be announced this summer.The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way's selection as one of the statewide winners of the Dominion East Ohio/Inside Business Community Impact Award for collaborative efforts in forming the Youngstown Afterschool Alliance at Hayes Middle School on Youngstown's north side.The 6th Annual Day of Caring was the largest ever, with over 400 employees from 42 local businesses participating in service projects throughout the community.The development of a marketing internship program designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop marketing and public relations skills through hands-on work experience.The growth of the Youth Day of Caring which provides participating students an opportunity to learn about United Way and the importance of volunteerism.The 2004 campaign which will be kicking off the Pacesetter Campaign on July 29 and the General Campaign on Sept. 14 with the community-wide Day of Caring, said Thomas R. Hollern, campaign chaigman and area president Northeastern Region, National City Corp. A Chevrolet Cobalt has been donated by Greenwood Chevrolet to be used as an incentive in the upcoming campaign, Cagigas announced.New officers and board members were elected at the annual meeting.
