United Way Day of Caring Launches Community-Wide Campaign
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The 7th annual Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way "Day of Caring" kicked off this morning at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Banquet Hall with a breakfast sponsored by Sky Bank. Following the breakfast, 450 volunteers from 50 businesses set out to complete projects at 41 locations throughout the community. The United Way "Day of Caring" is an annual community-wide service project in which employees of area companies paint, clean, do home repairs, serve meals, and participate in activities and field trips for United Way agencies. "Not only does the day of caring help our United Way agencies to complete much-needed tasks, but it provides our volunteers with an opportunity to see first-hand how these agencies work to meet the needs of the community," said Tom Hollern, area president of National City Bank, and chairman of the 2004 Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way campaign. "Our United Way is a volunteer-driven organization. Volunteers are active in all aspects of United Way, from raising funds, to public relations, to planning, reviewing community needs, and finally, to investing dollars in programs that will make a difference in the quality of life in our community," said Don Cagigas, United Way president and chief professional officer. "Day of caring emphasizes the importance of volunteerism. Volunteers are vital to the success of our agencies and to the success of our United Way." The event serves as the start of the annual community-wide United Way campaign. This year's goal is $3.2 million.Visit United Way of Youngstown/Mahoning Valley: www.ymvunitedway.org"
