CANTON, Ohio -- The 44,000 square foot W.R.Timken Center for Information Technology, dedicated recently at Stark State College, is the result of a public/private partnership that combines $1.6 million from the Timken Foundation, Timken family and The Timken Co., $5.1 million from the state of Ohio, and additional funding from federal monies, private companies and individuals. The center will enable Stark State College to expand its information technology course offerings and provide the community with the latest education.W.R. "Tim" Timken Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the Timken Co., said his family wanted to help provide a facility where Stark County residents can make a commitment to learning. "Technology training is so important to the future of our local economy, and Stark State College is prepared to provide it."The new center includes 520 networked PCs. The Center for Accelerated Learning features 61 networked computers with Internet access, providing student support services through computer and personal tutoring. Other high tech equipment supports the college's 43 associate degrees, and a wireless network allows students to connect personal laptops to the college network and laboratories. All classrooms and laboratories are equipped with multimedia features that include ceiling-mounted video projectors and instructor PC workstations to enhance learning and interaction. The W.R. Timken Center for Information Technology is located at the corner of Frank Avenue and Mega Street and connects to the Jackson Township campus via a two-story enclosed walkway."
