Republic Engineered Products Installs QVS at Lorain Mill
FAIRLAWN, Ohio -- Republic Engineered Products Inc., North America's largest producer of special bar quality steel, has installed a Quality Verification System at its 20-inch mill in Lorain, Ohio. The Lorain QVS will enable Republic to inspect bar for surface defects and straighten if needed without having to send the steel to another Republic plant or outside processors. This new operation has created 12 additional jobs for the Lorain work force to date."Our QVS will improve lead times, and that's good news for our customers," says Greg Paolini, Lorain plant manager. "It will also permit us to better manage our costs and inventory because we will be minimizing the amount of product we have to ship outside the plant for extra processing."The inspection line will be able to straighten and surface-inspect round bar product in the 3-inch to 5-inch range at a rate of 6,000 tons per month. Republic has also added new inspection tables with in-line scale systems to enhance bar inspection efficiencies. Some of the original equipment installed as part of the QVS had been located at a former RTI plant in Massillon, Ohio.Paolini says the Lorain QVS, which cost approximately $800,000, will soon pay for itself. "Our new system will make us more competitive because we're reducing the long term costs of logistics," he notes.Republic Engineered Products Inc.operates steelmaking centers in Canton and Lorain, Ohio, and value-added rolling and finishing facilities in Canton, Lorain and Massillon, Ohio; Lackawanna, N.Y.; Gary, Ind.; and Hamilton, Ontario.
