Rendell Delivers $1.8 Million for Mercer County Projects
SHARON, Pa -- More than $1.85 million in state funding is one its way to the cities of Sharon, Sharpsville and Farrell, Pa., and to the borough of Jamestown -- all in Mercer County -- following a stop here today by Pa. Gov. Edward G. Rendell. Rendell's visit was capped by the announcement of Joy Cone Co.'s $12 million expansion and renovation of its Hermitage, Pa., plant.The governor has crisscrossed the state over the last several weeks delivering funds for community projects and encouraging the renewal of the state's cities and towns."I have seen how communities can benefit from the Home Town Streets and Safe Routes to Schools funds that we are providing," Rendell said. "These programs give us the opportunity to work with Pennsylvania communities to make the best use of the tools provided by my economic stimulus program so we can bring new jobs to the region."Rendell presented $805,000 in Home Town Streets funding to the city of Sharon's downtown revitalization project, which includes safety improvements surrounding five intersections on the main traffic artery through the central business area. The governor also presented two checks totaling $274,474 to the city of Sharpsville and the Jamestown Borough as part of his Home Town Streets Safe Routes to Schools Program. Sharpsville will receive $120,000 in Home Town Streets funding to complete the remaining four phases of its streetscape improvement project, including new ornamental street lighting and matching signage. Jamestown's Safe Routes to Schools Project received $154,474 to replace four pedestrian bridges and adjacent sidewalks in the area of Jamestown's middle and high schools.In addition, the governor announced $500,000 in funding for the city of Farrell to rehabilitate 15- to 20 of the oldest homes in the city. Several hundred homes in the target area are in need of substantial rehabilitation. "
