Production to Start at Mahoning County's First Winery
BERLIN CENTER, Ohio -- You load 15 tons, and what do you get? If you're the Mastropietro family, and the tons are of grapes, you'll make wine -- and a little bit of history. On Sept. 11, the family will take delivery of more than 15 tons of California grapes, which will be turned into wine that will be sold in Mahoning County's first winery, said owner Dan Mastropietro.Within two weeks, additional grapes from Ohio and New York will arrive at the Mastropietro Winery, located at 14558 Ellsworth Road, the owner said. When the family's own vineyards, which were planted earlier this year, mature and begin to produce grapes, they will be added to the winemaking process, he said. With a planned opening in May 2005, the Mastropietro Winery is expected to be a "destination, a final stop for the evening as visitors relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery," Mastropietro noted. Visitors can relax by a lake, look at the vineyards and stroll along cobblestone pathways, he said. Plans are underway for special events and a banquet room will be available for intimate gatherings, he added."
