Ryan Seeks Quick Help for RG Steel Employees
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio 17, has urged Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to expedite the petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance for the estimated 1100 union and 135 salaried employees in the 17th District who have been affected by the layoffs at RG Steel Inc. LLC.
RG Steel iissued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices May 24 and layoffs began June 4 at its plants in Warren, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia.
The text of the letter follows:
Recently, RG Steel, Inc. LLC notified its employees in Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland that it was planning to shut down its operations due to an unexpected liquidity crisis. The company issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices on May 24, 2012, letting workers know layoffs would begin June 4 instead of in sixty days. The United Steelworkers (USW) represent the bulk of the affected employees (approximately 4000), including an estimated 1100 in my Congressional District. Additionally, there are 135 salaried and office workers in my district who are also affected.
It is my understanding a petition for these employees to be awarded Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) was submitted earlier this month. I want to encourage DOL’s full cooperation and expeditious review for the men and women who have been so adversely affected by the unanticipated layoffs at RG Steel, Inc. LLC. I stand ready to help in this process and in any other way to assist these individuals.
