'Ready for Hillary' to Stage Event in Niles
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Area Democrats will hold a “Ready for Hillary” Mahoning Valley organizing meeting Friday at the United Steelworkers Hall in Niles.
The event, in support of a potential 2016 presidential candidacy for Hillary Clinton, is being hosted by David Betras, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party; Kathy DiCristofaro, chairwoman of the Ohio Democratic Party’s women’s caucus; and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Howland. The event will run from 4-6 p.m.
In an email Monday afternoon, Betras reported that the Democrats “know we don’t have time to waste” and “have to begin organizing for the 2016 presidential election.” He cautioned, “[T]there is just too much at stake for any of us to sit on the sidelines.”
The same email incorrectly identifies former congressman Ron Paul as the candidate the “right-wing nut jobs” at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference decided was “the best person to succeed” President Barack Obama. U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, Ron Paul's son, was the winner of the CPAC straw poll, although the elder Paul mounted bids for president in 2008 and 2012.
The “Ready for Hillary” Super PAC has been active for several months. Last fall, Ryan signed on with the campaign as a supporter, the first member of Congress to publicly support the Super PAC.
In April 2008, Ryan endorsed Clinton over her then-fellow U.S. senator, Obama, after voters in the 17th District, which he represented at the time, “overwhelmingly voted” for Clinton in the Ohio Democratic primary. He later supported Obama, who won the 2008 general election over the Republican candidate, U.S. Sen. John McCain. The former first lady served as Secretary of State during Obama’s first term.
Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, also campaigned locally on Obama's behalf in the 2008 presidential election, as Bill Clinton did in 2012.
