Johnson's Campaign Boasts of $961K Warchest
MARIETTA, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-6 Ohio, reported he raised more than $380,000 for the quarter ended March 31, including more than $228,000 from individual donors. The Republican incumbent’s fundraising brings his total cash on hand for the campaign to $961,531.
Johnson’s campaign, in a news release issued Tuesday, contrasted Johnson’s $381,770 raised for the period with that of his expected Democratic opponent in this fall's election, Jennifer Garrison one of two candidates in the May Democratic Party primary. Garrison raised $92,683, including $34,392, while loaning her campaign $107,000.
Johnson campaign advisor Matt Dole said the campaign's $960,000 warchest indicates growing support heading into the general election.
“Because of the weak Democratic field, pundits no longer believe this campaign will be as hotly contested as first thought, but that doesn't mean we're not taking it seriously,” Dole said. “Regardless of who is successful in the Democratic primary we're looking forward to a rigorous debate about whether the people of eastern and southeastern Ohio want someone who shares Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama's values -- in the Democrat nominee -- or their own values in Bill Johnson.”
Mark Riddle, senior adviser to Garrison, disputed the Johnson campaign's assessment.
“A great number of people and organizations have invested in our campaign because they know we can do better than Congressman Johnson
and the mess he is part of in Washington,” Riddle said. “Jennifer Garrison has over four times the cash on hand that Bill Johnson had at this point when he was a challenger candidate. We will have the resources to get our message of fighting for the hard-working
families of the region, being a problem solver, and protecting our seniors out across the district.”
