Ohio Wine Industry Names Medal Winners
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Award-winning wines from around Ohio were celebrated at the recent Vintage Affair, an annual event to honor medal-winning wines from the Ohio Wine Competition.Friends of the Ohio wine industry joined the Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Grape Industries Committee in recognizing the "best of the best" with a People's Choice Award to complement the Director's Choice Awards, presented by Fred L. Dailey, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture."Ohio is on the path to becoming a premier wine region noted for its diversity and quality," Dailey said. "As Ohio seeks to develop new job opportunities, the Ohio grape industry continues to grow with new and expanding wineries and vineyards. This value-added agribusiness provides opportunities in the rural areas of Ohio as well as the urban communities. And, the high quality of entries in this year's Ohio Wine Competition is testament to the quality wines produced in our state."The Ohio Wine Competition is conducted by the Ohio Agricultural Research & Development Center in Wooster. A total of 256 wines were entered this year, the largest number in the competition's history, with 147 Ohio wines receiving either a gold, silver or bronze medal from a panel of seven independent judges. Wines are judged based on their relative merits within a class of similar wines.
