Ohio Water Treatment Plants Get $5M to Improve Secruity
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District today received a $196,000 state grant to fund improvements that would help guard the water treatment facility against acts of terrorism. MVSD serves 479,000 residents of the Mahoning Valley.The grant was one of eight announced today by Ohio Gov. Bob Taft. Through the coordinated efforts of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has allocated $5 million for improvements at eight publicly owned water treatment systems throughout Ohio.In addition to MVSD, other public water systems receiving grants operate in Canton, Dayton, Hamilton, Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo. Collectively they operate 17 plants that serve more than five million Ohio residents."Protecting critical infrastructure including water systems is essential to safeguard and enhance physical protection at vital sites around the state," said Taft.The U.S. Department of Homeland Security grants are designed to protect critical infrastructure by preventing malicious acts and minimize serious disruption or catastrophic loss, the governor noted."
