Mount Union Grads Opt for Responsible Citizenship
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Recent college graduates have many decisions before them as they leave the often comfortable confines of the college community. Mount Union College's Office of Service Learning and Community Service hopes those decisions will be made with an awareness for social and environmental responsibility. At a recent function for seniors, 170 of the recently graduated students signed a pledge saying, ""I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.""Mount Union's mission statement states that our job is to 'prepare students for meaningful work, fulfilling lives, and responsible citizenship,' said Jennifer Broome, director of service learning and community service at Mount Union. "We hope students will continue this responsible citizenship throughout their lives as they will be making many important decisions."Broome plans to present the pledge to next year's graduating class and hopes that the number of students involved will continue to grow. In addition, she hopes that what they have learned on the Mount Union campus about socially responsible behavior and community service will stay with them as they leave the campus and join other communities across the county and throughout the world."We supplied the seniors with a list of service organizations -- both domestic and international. We hope that they will get involved and volunteer," said Broome. "The pledge is just another way to perhaps serve as a reminder for them to think of their actions and decisions in the context of being socially and environmentally responsible."Visit Mount Union College: www.muc.edu"
