Local Group Organizes Gathering of Leadership Programs
ROOTSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University President David Sweet and Hunter Morrison, director of YSU's Center for Urban and Regional Studies, are among the scheduled presenters at a conference next week for 13 Northeast Ohio community leadership programs.The Leadership Mahoning Valley class will be among the 400 participants of 13 Northeast Ohio community leadership programs will meet April 29 at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine's Ralph Regula Conference Center in Rootstown, the first combined meeting of this many leadership programs in the country. The goal of the program is to inform participants about regional assets, demographics and economic drivers; to identify the constraints on regional progress; and to discuss how individuals, programs and the task force can assist regional development. The Northeast Ohio Regional Leadership Taskforce, based at YSU, organized the conference.The keynote speaker will be Robert D. Yaro, president of the Regional Plan Association, an independent metropolitan research and advocacy group based in Manhattan, N.Y. Yaro chairs the Civic Alliance to Rebuild Downtown New York, a coalition of civic groups formed to guide redevelopment in Lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In addition to Sweet and Morrison, presenters will include Mark Rosentraub, Ph.D., dean of the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University; Jim McCarthy, Summit County executive; Garfield Heights Mayor Thomas Longo; and Bob Farley, CEO of Team NEO.The regional day will include breakout panels with industry leaders and site visits to various institutions and businesses in Northeast Ohio so participants can learn about sectors that influence the regional economy such as technology transfer, metals, instrument control, advanced materials, manufacturing, financial services, logistics, distribution, agribusiness healthcare and bioresearch.The Northeast Ohio Regional Leadership is supported by Ohio's Urban University Program through the Northeast Ohio Research Consortium. Participating leadership groups are Cleveland Bridge Builders, Leadership Akron, Leadership Ashtabula County, Leadership Cleveland, Leadership Columbiana County, Leadership Geauga County, Leadership Lake County, Leadership Lorain County, Leadership Mahoning Valley, Leadership Medina County, Leadership Portage County, Leadership Stark County and Leadership Unlimited.
