Kerry Carries Kids' Votes
GLENDALE, Calif. -- They're not old enough to vote, but if them could, 40% of U.S. kids ages 8 to 17 would choose John Kerry, according to an online poll by Myers/Neopets.com. President George W. Bush garnered 38% of the youth vote, 1% said they'd pick Ralph Nader, and 11% were undecided.The poll included an equal number of boys and girls.Comparatively, a similar poll conducted prior to the Democratic National Convention showed Bush and Kerry in a virtual dead heat, reeling in 41% and 40% of the youngsters' votes, respectively. Another 2% said they'd vote for Nader, and 10% were undecided."Young people represent the most media savvy and sophisticated generation in history," Jack Myers, editor of the Jack Myers Report wrote in the Aug. 16 issue. "They actively use the Internet more than any prior generation; they have greater access to multiple news sources and are more aware of national and global events than previous generations because of their access to alternative media."Here's how today's young people find their news, according to the poll results:71% identify broadcast television networks as their primary source of news and information about the upcoming presidential elections, with 38% saying it's their most important source.41% rely on cable TV news, 45% read newspapers, and 40% use the Internet for information on the elections.Fox News Channel is the most watched network for election news, with 35%, followed by CBS (29%), NBC (28%), ABC (23%), CNN (20%) and MTV (12%).Yahoo!News is the leading Internet news source, with 23%."It is very interesting to see how closely the youth of America follow current events, including politics," said Rik Kinney, executive vice president of Neopets.
