Junior Achievement Gets Funding for After-School Program
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Junior Achievement of Warren/Youngstown, Ohio, will share in MetLife Foundation's award of$600,000 to Junior Achievement Inc. over the next three years to expand the organization's after-school programs and increase financial literacy among the country's young people through a time-tested curriculum that promotes fiscal responsibility, JA officials announced today. The grant establishes the MetLife Foundation After-School Fund, which will help 19 JA offices across the United States launch or expand after-school initiatives. Local offices will use the grants, ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 each, to leverage matching dollars and involvement locally. Each year, millions of young people get their first credit card, car loan, checking account or W-2 without ever having a class or even a conversation about personal finance. The purpose of the MetLife Foundation After-School fund is to establish new after-school partnerships, strengthen local funding sources, reach more economically disadvantaged children and youth, and provide young people with constructive activities that increase financial literacy during those after-school hours."JA and MetLife Foundation share a commitment to preparing young people for success in school, the workplace, and life," said David S. Chernow, president and chief executive officer of Junior Achievement."The after-school hours, when far too many young people are idle and unsupervised, are an opportune time to provide youth with fun, educational activities," added Sibyl Jacobson, president of MetLife Foundation.Local JA offices receiving support, selected from almost 50 applicants nationwide, include: Beaumont, Texas; Rockford, Ill.; Rockledge, Fla.; Owensboro, Ky.; Atlanta; Oklahoma City; Evansville, Ind.; Bowling Green, Ky.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; San Diego; Pittsburgh; Buffalo, N.Y.; Springfield, Mass.; Boston; Chicago; San Antonio; Warren/Youngstown, Ohio; Dallas; and Anchorage, Alaska. MetLife Foundation, established in 1976 by MetLife, supports health, education, civic and cultural programs throughout the United States. The Foundation has supported JA's educational programs since 1979. Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise. Through a volunteer network, JA offers in-school and after-school programs for students in grades K-12. Today, nearly 150 JA offices reach more than four million students nationwide.Visit MetLife Foundation: www.metlife.orgVisit Junior Achievement: www.ja.org"
