Humility of Mary Hospice to Receive $700,000"
WASHINGTON -- Humility of Mary Hospice of the Valley stands to receive $700,000 from the Omnibus Appropriations Bill passed recently by the U.S. House of Representatives, according to U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio 6th). The bill, which passed by a vote of 344 to 51, includes millions of dollars for projects in the Buckeye State's 6th Congressional District, Strickland said."The passage of this bill will bring needed resources to the Mahoning County," said Strickland, who voted for the bill. "The construction of the inpatient facility will fill a vacancy in services currently offered in our area. I look forward to the successful completion of this project." Hospice of the Valley will use this funding to help design, construct, and operate a 16-bed inpatient facility to better meet the needs of the terminally ill within the community, Strickland said. In addition to the patient rooms on the first floor, which have garden views, the facility will have a children's area, bereavement center, family lounges, meditation room and education center. Hospice of the Valley cares for patients with terminal illnesses including cancer, congestive heart failure, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), and neurological disorders. Currently, there is no local facility to provide inpatient services for the terminally ill, Strickland said. The Fiscal Year 2005 Appropriations bill also included $400,000 to fund Mental Health Courts. Mental health courts are courts with dedicated dockets and a dedicated judge where defendants may receive court-supervised treatment rather than a jail sentence. Strickland said he worked with Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine to create the program in 2000."
