'Hot Rod Penguin' Revs Up for Raffle at Canfield Fair
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A bird in the hand is worth more than $4,000, and it will belong to the winner of a raffle that kicks off this week at the Canfield Fair."Hot Rod Penguin," a seven-foot-tall fiberglass penguin decorated in red and yellow flames by commercial artist Guy Shively, will be on display at the Youngstown State University tent outside the grandstand at the fair, university officials reported. Raffle tickets costing $5 each, or five for $20, will be sold at the tent.The bird is one of 31 penguin sculptures in this summer's Penguin Parade, a public arts project co-sponsored by YSU and the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, according to a YSU news release.Proceeds from the raffle and the auction will benefit the McDonough Museum of Art and SMARTS (Students Motivated by the Arts) at YSU, the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and its endowment funds for Beatitude House, Community Living, Goodwill Industries, Junior League of Youngstown, Leadership Mahoning Valley, Potential Development, and Youngstown Hearing and Speech, the release stated.Another penguin -- "Reflections of Youngstown Pride" -- will be on display at the Floral and Fine Arts building at the fair. The penguin is the creation of artists Lynn Cardwell and Marcie Roepke-Applegate. YSU's tent also will include photo kiosks depicting all 31 of the penguins in the Penguin Parade. Fairgoers will be able to purchase Penguin Parade calendars, note cards and mugs, according to the news release.After the fair, raffle tickets will be sold at all Key Bank locations, the offices of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley in downtown Youngstown and the Office of University Development in Tod Hall on the YSU campus, the release said.The drawing for the winner of "Hot Rod Penguin" will take place Oct. 29 in Stambaugh Auditorium. On that date, the full flock of penguins will gather one last time for a fund-raising auction at Stambaugh Auditorium, at which time the drawing for "Hot Rod Penguin" will be conducted, the release said.View all Penguin Parade creations: www.ysu.edu/penguinparade"
