Grove City College Razes President's House
GROVE CITY, Pa. - The president's house at Grove City College, in existence since 1957, is being razed to make room for a new residence for President Richard G. Jewell and his wife, Dayl Jewell.Jewell will mark his first year as president in September. He and his wife have lived in the Cunningham House, a guest residence on lower campus, since their arrival at Grove City College last summer. The new residence will be built in the same location. Funds for the construction were donated through various gifts to the college. These gifts include the Cross Trust, a sum of money given to the college specifically for a new president's house and other campus construction. Therefore, no funds will be taken from the current capital campaign or the college's operating budget, and the project will not affect any student charges, says David R. Rathburn, chairman of the board of trustees. "In fact, since its establishment, more money has accumulated in the trust, enabling the Grove City College trustees to redirect some funds for the student activities center and other projects such as the ongoing renovations of the Physical Learning Center that will benefit the entire campus community," Rathburn notes. "After 50 years, we felt it was time for a new, more welcoming residence to be a part of our campus."In the new house, space will be available to welcome visitors as well as for meetings, dinners and other functions.Ground for the new house will be broken in the next few weeks, shortly after demolition of the current residence is completed. Wallace Builders will be in charge of the demolition as well as the construction of the new house, which should be completed by Feb. 1.The existing house was built for the college's fourth president, J. Stanley Harker, and was inhabited by its fifth president, Charles S. MacKenzie, its sixth president, Jerry H. Combee, and its seventh president, John H. Moore, who retired in 2003.Founded in 1876, Grove City College has 2,300 students and is a private Christian college teaching the liberal arts, sciences and engineering. It is an advocate of the free market economic system and accepts no federal funding.Visit Grove City College: www.gcc.edu"
