YSU's Penguin Review to Mark 50th Anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Penguin Review, Youngstown State University's student-run print magazine, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a commemorative edition and a launch party Nov. 20. Penguin Review was created in 1964 to give YSU students an opportunity to share their talents with a wider audience.
Since the launch, more than 1,500 students have published poetry, art, fiction, screenplays and creative non-fiction in the Review. The magazine, which is released annually, has gone through many changes through the years.
“The one thing that has not, and I hope will not change is that Penguin Review publishes what the staff, made up of graduate and undergraduate students, believes to be very strong work from university undergraduates in any discipline,” said Tom Pugh, co-editor. “I hope that in 50 more years, we will be invited to a 100th anniversary.”
Penguin Review: 50 Years in Review is a double-length commemorative magazine, reprinting work that has been previously published by the Penguin Review. The 50th launch party will feature readings and artwork displays from former contributors and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available. All attendees will receive a free copy of the 50th anniversary edition. The magazine will also be available by donation.
“It’s always a milestone when an artistic cultural institution lasts through anniversaries,” said Tiffany Anderson, assistant professor of English and Penguin Review adviser. “The very fact that Penguin Review lasted for 50 years is not only notable and impressive, but very much so historical. Reading the commemorative edition is like reading the history of YSU. This is what art is in many ways: a documentation of our lives in beautiful, emotional and remarkably honest literary forms.”
Penguin Review is still accepting creative writing and art work submissions from YSU undergraduates for the spring 2015 edition.
The party will begin at 7 p.m. in the DeBartolo Stadium Club at Stambaugh Stadium on campus.
