YSU Sustainable Energy Forum Is June 4, 5
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The fourth annual Youngstown State University Sustainable Energy Forum, expected to draw more than 200 academics, energy industry leaders, government officials and entrepreneurs, will be Monday and Tuesday, June 4 and 5. The event will take place in Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus.
Confirmed speakers on June 4 include:
- • U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-6 Ohio;
- • Marc Gerken, president of American Municipal Power (keynote speaker);
- • Jason Walsh, senior advisor, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy;
- • Mark Kodack, project manager, Office of Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Energy and Sustainability): “Net Zero Energy, Net Zero Water and Net Zero Waste”;
- • Daniel Frakes, General Motors manager of vehicle, fuels, and advanced technology policy;
- • Ruston Seaman, executive director of New Vision: “Unleashing the Power of Communities to Harness the Energy of the Sun in America: A New Vision of Possibilities”;
- • Daniel Sawmiller, senior campaign representative, Sierra Club: “Ohio’s Move Towards Clean Energy”;
- • Rob Zahotchak, communications director of the Pittsburgh Green Building Alliance: “Demands of the Green Building Marketplace”;
- • Sam Randazzo, Industrial Energy Users of Ohio: “Leveraging Continuous Improvement Business Models to Improve Energy Productivity”;
- • Rhonda Reda, executive director, Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program;
- • David Mordan, Dominion Transmission: “Natrium, West Virginia Processing Plant”;
- • Scott Hallam, manager of Development and Operations, Chesapeake Midstream Management: “Midstream Processing.”
A series of technical sessions are planned for June 5 on topics such as renewables, waste-to-energy, natural gas, water resources, vehicle electrification, energy management, small nuclear and grid/storage.
The forum will also will include an interactive discussion on Youngstown Urban Agriculture in conjunction with Global Green USA. Leaders in the urban agriculture movement will share lessons learned and effective practices for transforming blight into useful and economically viable spaces. In addition, the Forum will feature an “Energy Expo” in which companies display products and technologies.
The forum’s main focus is on technology that is ready for commercialization, especially those technologies that will have a near-term positive impact on commercial, industrial and residential energy savings, officials said. A key objective is to build collaboration among attendees. At previous forums, entrepreneurs have teamed up with YSU students and faculty to pursue research funding. Researchers have also engaged large energy companies for insights and opportunities.
