YSU Students to Compete in Builders' Competition
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Six veterans of the local construction community are ready to put their protégés to the test next week at the annual construction estimating competition sponsored by the Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
These mentors have met with civil and construction engineering technology students from Youngstown State University to mentor the students’ estimating skills.
Next Friday, 10 of those YSU students will divide into two teams and will be given a real-life construction project to analyze and prepare a construction bid just as they would if they were working in the actual industry. The team that most accurately completes the entire bid will be crowned the 2014 champs.
“We anticipate the same level of production this year as in other years,” said the executive vice president of The Builders, Kevin Reilly. “Everyone involved in this competition, from the judges to the YSU faculty to the students, are incredibly focused on what we are trying to achieve, and it shows with the excellent quality of the bids that each teams submits.”
The annual event began in 2009, and is student-driven. Each year, The Builders awards scholarships to YSU students who are studying for a career in construction. At the 2008 award ceremony, scholarship recipients expressed a desire to work on an actual building project, and The Builders created the event in response.
The featured project will be an actual job that was awarded to -- and built by -- a member of The Builders. Each team will get a set of plans and specifications, a partially complete bid worksheet, labor costs, and unit costs. Teams must present a written, complete estimate, including take-offs, pricing, quote sheets, etc. Teams will have a 20-minute bid discussion with judges, additional members of The Builders and construction executives.
The event begins at 9 a.m. in room 2400 of Moser Hall. The winning team will be announced at a dinner that night in Kilcawley Center.
Members of The Builders who will mentor the students include Dave Wendel, Adolph Johnson & Son Co.; Jim Bayer and Joe DeSalvo, DeSalvo Construction Co.; Ed Stevens, Stevens Masonry Construction; Kyle Leonard, Imperial Glazing Concepts; and Chris White, Boak and Sons. In addition to DeSalvo and White, the panel of judges will include Craig Fauvie, Jack Gibson Construction Co; Dan Terreri, Daniel A. Terreri & Sons; Howard Agueda, Evets Oil & Gas Construction Services; and Ed Van Dusen, Van Dusen Construction Co.
