YSU Names Sturrus Interim Dean of STEM College
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Gregg Sturrus, chairman of the department of physics and astronomy at Youngstown State University, has been named interim dean of the YSU College of Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics effective Oct. 8, pending approval by the university board of trustees.
The office of the president issued the announcement to the YSU campus Thursday afternoon, a spokesman said.
Sturrus would succeed Martin Abraham, earlier named interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.
The university also announced that James Andrews, professor of physics and astronomy, would succeed Sturrus in that department, becoming acting chairman.
Teri Riley, a professor of economics who has been serving as acting provost, would become senior associate provost of the university, pending trustees’ approval.
Sturrus earned his baccalaureate in physics and mathematics at Hope College, Holland, Mich., and his doctorate in physics at the University of Notre Dame. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Virginia and was a visiting professor at both Notre Dame and Colorado State University before coming to YSU in 1991.
Sturrus became a full professor at YSU in 1991 and has served as chairman of his department since 2004.
