Williams, Execs to Join MVMC Summit on April 12
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Oh-Penn Interstate Region Manufacturing Workforce Summit scheduled for April 12 will feature business and government leaders including Jay Williams, director of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Auto Recovery for Communities and former mayor of the city. at Youngstown State University. The event includes panel discussions and team work sessions.
The summit is hosted by the Mahoning Valley Manufacturing Coalition and Industry Partners of Lawrence and Mercer Counties. It takes place at Youngstown State University. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m., with a welcome at 8 a.m. by Dale Foerster, vice president of Starr Manufacturing, and Amy Weller, director of community & employee development, Ellwood Crankshaft Group. The schedule of presentations is as follows:
8:10 a.m. The Community Challenge: Skilled Workforce Shortages moderated by Andrea Wood, publisher of The Business Journal. Panelists are Brian Benyo, president of Brilex Industries Inc.; Coleen Chamberlain, HR administrator/specialist, Xaloy Inc.; Dale Deist, president, Deist Industries; Mike Garvey, president, M-7 Technologies; and Trina Raucher-Cooper, human resources executive, V&M Star.
9 a.m. Strategies for Attracting, Developing & Retaining a Skilled Workforce: An Expert Panel Discussion, moderated by Wood. Panelists are Williams, Dennis Dio Parker, Toyota North American Training Center; Craig Dotson, apprenticeship training program specialist, U. S. Department of Labor; Rich Frederick, director, workforce transformation, Office of the Ohio Governor; and Jim Herrholz, associate superintendent, Division of Learning, Ohio Department of Education.
Team work sessions begin at 10 a.m., and each participant will attend one of the following sessions:
- Changing Perceptions of the Manufacturing Image
- Informed Choices: Providing Knowledge of Career Options and Educational Resources
- Placing Talent: The Value of Assessments and Credentials
- Redesigning Education for Occupations
- Work Experience: Creating More Opportunities for Hands-on Learning
- Aligning Education with Employers' Needs
- Advanced Practices: New Ideas for Increasing Retention and Job Satisfaction
Lunch and a keynote address will begin at noon with an introduction by Dan Kuba, director, Bureau of Workforce Development Partnership, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. The keynote address, "Closing the Manufacturing Skills Gap: Regional Economic Development and the NAM-Endorsed Skills Certification System," will be by Brent Weil, senior director for education and workforce at The Manufacturing Institute. He will share the latest findings on the growing manufacturing skills shortages and review the Skills Certification System with emphasis on steps the Oh-Penn Interstate Region can take to increase the skill set of workers and job applicants within the regional economy.
At 1:30 p.m., the wrap-up and "Next Steps for Action" begins, featuring U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson (OH - 6); U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (PA - 3); U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; Eric Karmecy, assistant director, West Central Job Partnership; and Jessica Borza, executive director, Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition. The summit will adjourn at 2 p.m.
The summit will be held in Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus. The fee is $50 per person and $350 for a table of eight.
