Ohio OKs $298K for YSU 3-D Printing Equipment
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The State Controlling Board voted Monday to approve $298,773 for equipment purchases to support additive manufacturing training at Youngstown State University.
The funds will be used to purchase a vacuum sintering furnace for $143,288 from TevTech LLC, of North Billerica, Mass., and an in-situ non-contact metrology AIM system from M-7 Technologies Inc. in Youngstown. TevTech submitted the lowest of four bids for the furnace and M-7 was the sole bidder for its system, according to Controlling Board documents.
YSU is collaborating with Eastern Gateway Community College, Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, Choffin Career and Technical Center. Kent State University Trumbull Campus, Cleveland State University and the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition on workforce development for additive manufacturing – also known as 3-D printing.
The equipment will be used to “form the foundation of an integrated additive manufacturing curriculum covering the entire AM process,” including design, printing and post-processing of the part to meet customer specifications, documents show. In addition to supporting student educational needs, the equipment will be used by industry for training and retraining workers.
Additionally, the board approved $255,471 for roof renovations at YSU. The funds approved Monday will address water filtration issues in the Edward J. Salata Complex on campus. Areas of the roof will be completely removed and replaced, and new flashing and insulation will be installed. The building houses YSU’s facilities and grounds departments, mail room, central receiving and print shop.
