Local History Sourcebook Available to Public
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A new sourcebook that highlights and facilitates use of area museums and libraries with local history-related archival holdings is now available. The sourcebook lists available resources including collections of original documents and photographs, business and government records, books, manuscripts, and maps, and describes how and when they can be accessed by the public.
Printed copies of the sourcebook, published by the Mahoning Valley Collecting Institutions Roundtable, are being distributed at no cost to local schools, libraries, museums and visitor centers, according to Leann Rich, manager of education and external relations at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. Free copies for the public are available at branches of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, Youngstown State University’s Maag Library, and Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
The Mahoning Valley Collecting Institutions Roundtable is a group of heritage institutions and public libraries in Trumbull and Mahoning Counties. Formed in 2005, its members include the Ohio Historical Society’s Youngstown Historical Center for Industry and Labor, Mill Creek Metroparks’ Fellows Riverside Gardens, McKinley Memorial Library, National Packard Museum, Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, Youngstown State University’s University Archives & Special Collections, Trumbull County Historical Society and the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
The sourcebook is intended for use by local history researchers, genealogists, students and academics, and members of the general public interested in exploring primary resources. It was made possible, in part, by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional funding was provided by the Kennedy Family Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.
The sourcebook also is available online.
